“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.” – Stephen King
I’ve been a voracious reader ever since my father gave in one day after what felt like a year of begging to teach me to read. The first book I ever read was a Sesame Street Book, The Monster at the End of the Book, and yes, I updated this in 2021 to include the video link for anyone who reads my old posts.
When you get a reputation for being a bit of a book connoisseur, people start asking you for recommendations of what to read. This happens to me more often than not. Especially since everyone knows I’m that weirdo that clings to the romanticism of holding a physical book and that the nook given to me for Christmas last year sleeps as soundly as Rip Van Winkle in the back of my sock drawer.
I figured my blog would be a great place to list all I read in 2013 so far and perfectly timed as many folks start planning their summer vacations and beach or lakeside reads. Lately, I’ve been reading many dramatic works of fiction, with a sprinkling of poetry and nonfiction.
Without further ado, in order of oldest to most recently read:
Call Me If You Need Me by Raymond Carver
In Praise of Messy Lives by Katie Roiphe
On Writing by Stephen King (re-read)
Lust and Other Stories by Susan Minot
We Live in Water by Jess Walters
Darkness Visible by William Styron
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
Just an Ordinary Day by Shirley Jackson
We Don’t Live Here Anymore by Andre Dubus
Waiting for Grace & Other Poems by Christopher Locke
